Godparents and sponsors are role models in the faith. The primary difference between the two is a sponsor accompanies a catechumen or candidate during formation. A godparent is a permanent relationship with the unbaptized person beginning with their final preparation for baptism.
As role models, godparents and sponsors witness to living the Catholic faith by their frequent celebration of the sacraments, attending Mass, and serving others. By the example and support of godparents and sponsors, as well as the support of the entire faith community, the catechumens and candidates learn to turn more readily to God in prayer, to bear witness to the faith in their lives, and to follow supernatural inspiration through grace in their deeds and practice of the love of neighbor, and, in all things, keep their hopes set on Christ.
The Code of Canon Law (Church Law) specifies the requirements for serving as a godparent or sponsor: You may not be the parent of the person being initiated, you must be at least 16 years old; you must be fully initiated (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist); if married, be in valid Catholic marriage; and live a life of active faith in the Catholic Church.
Sponsors normally attend all Sunday formation sessions, strive to make contact with their catechumen or candidate during the week outside of the formation session. Training is offered.
